Acne Homemade Treatments

As you will have discovered if you have read other pages of the Zitblitz website, acne (or Acne vulgaris as it’s technically known) is cause by the infection of the sebum glands in the hair follicles by a bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes. Ideally, to get rid of your acne, you need to get rid of these bacteria, and therefore you need to treat yourself or your skin with an antibiotic.

Acne and the Romans

However, centuries of experimentation by do-it-yourself medics, stretching as far back as the Romans (Galen was their most famous physician) has shown that some acne homemade treatments are more effective than others. Here’s a selection of the most common ones. We can’t make any claims as their effectiveness but you might like to give them a try just to see what happens!

Open Your Pores First

With all these acne homemade preparations, it’s probably best to steam your face first to open up the pores and give the treatment the best chance of getting into your skin.

Fourteen Acne Homemade Treatments

  1. Mint is thought to be effective. In fact many plants that secrete aromatic oils are believed to be helpful against acne. Crush some mint leaves up, and try to soak up some of the juice on some cotton wool and apply to the skin. Leave it on for half an hour or so. Then rinse off with warm water.
  2. Mashed plums are thought to be good. The riper the better. Make a facepack of the pulp and apply to the face for half an hour. Some people add a few drops of almond oil to the mix, it’s up to you.
  3. Here’s a Roman one - Mallow (malva silvestris) – we don’t know how it was actually applied so you might want to experiment with the flowers, leaves etc. It was thought to be helpful for inflammations of the skin among other things.
  4. Aloe Vera has found its way into all sorts of proprietary skin care products so it must have something going for it. It’s thought to reduce acne scars and heal acne spots. Make a facepack of the crushed aloes.
  5. Some spices appear time and time again in herbal medicine. Turmeric is one such. Not only is it thought to heal acne spots but it’s supposed to reduce man boobs and cure digestive problems. Make a paste with water or olive oil and apply to the face. Beware though, it’s bright yellow and you could end p with a yellow face for a few days. Try it on the back of your hand first.
  6. Sandalwood, is one of those aromatic plants that smells so good it just has to work as an acne homemade treatment. I don’t know where you’d get sandalwood paste but if you can get hold of some it’s worth a try.
  7. This is from Galen, the Roman medic - Cherry (prunus avium) stones, ground up into a paste and rubbed on the skin was supposed to be good for acne. It might well have had something to do with the exfoliant effect of the crushed stones. Exfoliating is always good for acne.
  8. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Easily obtainable in supermarkets. Mix to a paste, apply to the skin and gently rub in. Allow it to dry on the skin. As a dry face fack it will absorb excess oils from your skin. Rinse off with warm water.
  9. Brambles (rubus fruticosus) – Both the Romans and the Greeks dried and ground the leaves and the bark of the bramble to make a lotion. It was thought to have good astringent qualities and as such, was used for all sorts of skin conditions.
  10. Egg whites – ditch the yolks and whisk the egg whites to make a meringue. Then apply to the face. Good luck with that!
  11. Our old favourite for just about every ailment under the sun – vinegar. Dilute in the same amount of water and use as a face wash.
  12. Lemon juice – pretty much as above. Don’t use either of these undiluted as they are stronger than you think on delicate skin.
  13. Marigold leaves – grind them up to make a paste. (Everyone experimenting with acne homemade remedies needs a pestle and mortar.) Apply as a face pack for half an hour.
  14. Honey – all homeopathic acne treatments mention honey for acne somewhere along the line. Apply to the face and lie down with it on for as long as you like. It’s supposed to have antiseptic properties.

There you go, a good selection of acne homemade remedies. Don’t expect too much from them though. If any of them really worked at getting rid of acne then no one would have acne any more, would they?
