Treating Nose Spots Properly

As you probably know, acne is caused by a bacterial inflammation of the sebum glands which lie alongside each hair follicle on our skin. Pretty much every part of our body is covered by hair – only the soles of our feet, the palms of our hands and a couple of rude bits that I won’t mention are hairless.

You might think that your nose is hairless, but believe me, it’s covered in fine hairs. This means that almost everywhere is susceptible to the inflammation problem. But there are certain parts that are much more susceptible to it than others. These are the areas of the face, neck, across the shoulders and across the chest. And, on the face, the nose is the most prominent area.

Because your nose protrudes from your face it’s a very obvious and prime target for squeezing any spots that appear. It’s very tempting to squeeze any spot but there are several reasons why you mustn’t do it.

  1. Because the pus inside a spot is a liquid, if you remember your physics lessons from school, any pressure that is exerted upon it will act in all directions. That means that not only will the pus be forced upward and out of your skin as it breaks the surface layer, but it will also be forced further down the hair follicle. And when it’s forced down the follicle it takes the bacteria (that caused it in the first place) down with it. That’s the last thing you want as that will only lead to more inflammation in the future.
  2. When deep inflammation takes place, rather than getting the surface whiteheads that are unsightly but will eventually go away on their own, you’ll get hard lumpy cysts beneath the surface layers of the skin. It is these cysts that lead to permanent scarring which, of course, you want to avoid at all costs.
  3. As you will have found, some spots are very resistant to squeezing. The result is that we squeeze them all the harder. This leads to bleeding from broken and torn blood vessels. The skin makes a pretty good job of repairing itself but if you do this too often you’ll get enlarged blood vessels in the nose leading to permanent and irreparable redness and probably enlarged pores.

So, what’s the best way of dealing with nose spots?  Well, it depends what sort of nose spots they are.

In all cases though, it’s important to get your pores open to make the removal of any unwanted material that much easier. Steaming is the best way to do this. If your house doesn’t run to having a built in sauna, you need to fill a large bowl with boiling water. It needs to be large because a small bowl will cool down too quickly and you won’t get much steam for long enough. If you want you could add a few drops of menthol, or peppermint oil or tea tree oil to the water to create a healthy-smelling atmosphere. Drape a towel over your head and sit there for half an hour to let the warmth of the steam open up the pores of your nose. And this includes the pores containing your nose spots. Top up the boiling water if it stops steaming.

Now, get a rough, dry flannel or facecloth and gently rub at the skin of your nose. Not too hard or you’ll make your nose redder than it already is. This should remove a lot of the surface debris.

If the nose spots you’re dealing with are blackheads (technically called open comedones) then using a proprietary blackhead extractor is the way to go, these only cost a few dollars and are very effective and painless.

Here is a selection, available from Amazon:

Don’t squeeze, remember what we said about squeezing?

If your nose spots are whiteheads (closed comedones) then, if they are sufficiently near the surface, the rubbing with a dry flannel may be enough to disrupt the very upper layer of skin to let the sebum out. An alternative is to take a sterilised needle (the best way is to pass a sewing needle momentarily through a flame, sufficient to kill any bacteria but not enough to heat the needle). Usually just the lightest of touches on the top of the whitehead will be enough to rupture the skin. Don’t dig the needle in and don’t make a big tear in the skin, just a tiny touch is all that’s needed. This will release the trapped sebum without squeezing.

Now wash your face with an antiseptic soap or lotion. You’ll then need to relax for a while to let your skin hydration return to normal. Don't wash your skin, or your nose spots for that matter, too often. This will dry out your skin which will then respond by producing more oils and sebum. Gentle washing morning and evening is quite sufficient.

Skin care, including the treatment of nose spots is all down to cleanliness and common sense. Your skin is delicate so don’t treat it roughly. Proper treatment with the appropriate soaps and cleansers will make a big difference but remember, nothing will happen overnight so be patient!
